Navigating Editor’s Markup

Understanding how to use Track Changes and see all the markup in your document from your editor is important. Below is a simple guide for Microsoft Word:

·         With your document open in Word, click on REVIEW in the tabs at the top.

·         In the COMMENTS section, make sure Show Comments is toggled on.

·         In the TRACKING section, make sure All Markup and Show Markup is selected.

Hopefully now you’ll see everything your editor did to your work. Normally, insertions (what and editor added in) will be in RED, and deletions (what they have taken out) will be crossed out and in BLUE. Comments will be in bubbles off to the side.

From here you can go through your work and from the CHANGES section Accept or Reject what your editor did. Remember: if the Track Changes button is toggled on, anything you do in the document will be tracked with either red or blue. It’s up to you if you want to have that or not.

If you want a clean manuscript to work from without any markings, change All Markup to No Markup. As an alternative, you can also Accept All Changes (from the Accept pull down in the CHANGES section) and resave your file under a new name. I would recommend keeping your edited version as is so you have a reference with your editor’s suggestions.
